Tragedy in Texas—Tears and Prayers

There are moments when words fall short, and all we can do is weep and pray. This is such a moment.

An unimaginable tragedy struck Texas late Friday night when a sudden and catastrophic flood overwhelmed the Kerrville region and surrounding communities. In just four hours, the area received the equivalent of four months of rain. The Guadalupe River surged an astonishing 26 feet in just 45 minutes—destroying homes, cabins, and summer camps as people slept.

As of Monday afternoon, at least 104 people have lost their lives, across six counties. Dozens more people remain missing, and 850 people have been rescued—some after being swept up to 15 miles downstream. Even more heartbreaking, many of the victims were children attending summer camps. Torrential rains continue, and more flooding is expected.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared Sunday, July 6, a State Day of Prayer, as residents across the region gather to grieve, support one another, and begin the painful work of rebuilding.

As the body of Christ, let us join our prayers with theirs. This is a time for tears. A time for mercy. A time to stand in the gap for those who have lost everything.

Let's Pray:

1. Father, our hearts are broken for the people of Texas. The weight of this tragedy is almost too much to bear. You see every family devastated, every home washed away, every life lost—and You care.

2. We ask You to wrap Your arms around those who are grieving the sudden loss of loved ones. Be near to the brokenhearted. Comfort every father and mother, every child and grandparent whose world has been turned upside down. Let them feel Your presence in the midst of their pain.

3. We pray for those still missing—God, lead search and rescue teams to them. Give supernatural strength and insight to emergency responders. If even one more life can be saved, please make it so.

4. We lift up the children who survived but are now traumatized—Lord, heal their hearts. Surround them with people who will love them, protect them, and walk with them through the days ahead. Shield their minds from lasting harm. Let this not be the end of their story but the beginning of a testimony of Your goodness.

5. We cry out for the towns and communities swept away by this flood. Be their refuge and strength, their ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Mobilize the Church to respond with compassion and resources. Let neighbors rise up to care for one another. We speak peace over the chaos and hope over despair.

And Lord, as we mourn, we remember that nothing can separate us from Your love—not life or death, not floods or fear (Romans 8). Draw near to Texas in this hour. Let Your mercy flow like a river. Rebuild what has been broken. Restore what has been lost. Bring beauty from ashes and hope in the midst of heartbreak. In Jesus’ name, we pray.

Amen.
